Volleyball Game Preview: Coronado Cougars vs. Cheyenne Mountain Red-Tailed Hawks

After both having extra time off, the Coronado Cougars and the Cheyenne Mountain Red-Tailed Hawks will shake off the cobwebs and hit the court against one another at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday.

Coronado is coming in fresh off a high-stakes matchup with another one of Colorado's top teams: Regis Groff, who was ranked tenth at the time (Coronado was ranked ninth). Coronado fell just short of Regis Groff by a score of 2-1 on Saturday. The matchup marked the Cougars' lowest-scoring contest so far this season.

Coronado started the match hot and won the first set, but they struggled down the stretch and lost the last two. The match finished with set scores of 25-27, 25-22, 15-11.

Meanwhile, Cheyenne Mountain put another one in the bag last Wednesday to keep their perfect season alive. They blew past Doherty 3-0.

Cheyenne Mountain walked away with the win (and looked especially good in the first set). Once all was said and done, the final score wound up at 25-13, 25-21, 25-19.

Cheyenne Mountain's victory was their fourth straight on the road, which pushed their record up to 8-0. A key ingredient in that success has been their performance when it comes to blocks: they averaged an imposing 5.25 blocks in those games compared to only 0.25 in the others. As for Coronado, their defeat was their first of the season and makes their record 11-1.

Coronado might still be hurting after the 3-0 loss they got from Cheyenne Mountain in their previous matchup back in April of 2024. Can Coronado avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
