Volleyball Recap: Southern Wayne Victorious

Southern Wayne took a three-set defeat the last time they faced off against Smithfield-Selma, but this time they managed to keep it close and that made all the difference. The Saints had just enough and edged out the Spartans 3-2 on Wednesday. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest victory the Saints have posted against the Spartans since October 6, 2022.

Southern Wayne took Smithfield-Selma into a fifth set where they got it done with a five-point win. The match finished with set scores of 23-25, 27-25, 25-18, 19-25, 15-10.

Southern Wayne found their leader in freshman Addison McPhail, who had eight digs, five aces, and one block. Lea Carachure was another key player, getting 15 digs.

Southern Wayne was lethal from the service line and finished the match with 20 aces. That's the most aces they've posted since back in August of 2024.

Smithfield-Selma's loss came despite a true team effort with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Karmen Cyrus, who had 32 assists. Another player making a difference was Kaylie Gilyardi, who had 17 kills.

Southern Wayne's win bumped their record up to 3-16. As for Smithfield-Selma, they have been struggling recently as they've lost six of their last seven contests. That's put a noticeable dent in their 6-13 record this season.

Southern Wayne wasted no time getting back out on the court and has already played their next match, a 3-0 defeat against Fike on the 2nd. As for Smithfield-Selma, they have also already played their next matchup, a 3-0 loss against Fuquay - Varina on the 2nd.
