Seymour is 1-9 against Waterbury Career Academy since December of 2017 but they'll have a chance to close the gap a little bit on Saturday. The Seymour Wildcats will challenge the Waterbury Career Academy Spartans at 12:45 p.m. Seymour knows how to get points on the board -- the squad has finished with 55 points or more in their past 11 games -- so hopefully Waterbury Career Academy likes a good challenge.
Fans were treated to a battle of the Wildcats on Thursday. Seymour enjoyed a cozy 70-54 victory over Wilby. Seymour has beaten Wilby the last three times they've met, but they better watch out: this was the closest Wilby has come to flipping the script.
Joey Carrafiello continued his habit of posting crazy stat lines, dropping a double-double with 26 points and ten rebounds. That makes it six consecutive games in which he has scored at least a third of Seymour's points. Another player making a difference was Robby Carrafiello, who went 6-for-13 on his way to 12 points in addition to eight assists and five boards.
Seymour smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 13 offensive rebounds. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least nine offensive boards in five consecutive contests.
Meanwhile, Waterbury Career Academy faced Holy Cross in a battle between two of the state's top teams on Tuesday. Waterbury Career Academy took a 67-62 hit to the loss column at the hands of Holy Cross. While the Spartans didn't get the win, they did start the game off strong, beating the Crusaders 19-15 in the first quarter.
Seymour will have to contain Jeremiah Williams as he made an impact in Waterbury Career Academy's last game. He posted 28 points. Williams' evening made it four games in a row in which he has scored at least 19 points. The team also got some help courtesy of Anthony Rodriguez, who scored 16 points.
Seymour's win bumped their record up to 14-7. As for Waterbury Career Academy, their loss ended a four-game streak of away wins and brought them to 16-4.
Rebounding is likely to be a big factor in this contest: Seymour has been smashing the glass this season, having averaged 30.2 rebounds per game. However, it's not like Waterbury Career Academy struggles in that department as they've been averaging 27 boards. With both teams battling to corral missed shots, we'll see if one team can grab an edge.
Seymour ended up a good deal behind Waterbury Career Academy in their previous meeting back in January, losing 64-48. Can Seymour avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
