Softball Game Preview: Mt. Vernon Marauders vs. Greenfield-Central Cougars

The Mt. Vernon Marauders will square off against the Greenfield-Central Cougars at 5:30 p.m. on Friday. Mt. Vernon has given up an average of 8.2 runs per game this season, but Friday's game will give them a chance to turn things around.

Fishers hit Mt. Vernon with a six-run second inning on Thursday, which goes a long way in explaining the final result. The Marauders came up short against the Tigers, falling 16-4. The Marauders have now taken an 'L' in back-to-back games.

Emma Jenkins was cooking despite her team's loss, going 2-for-4 with one home run. Another player making a difference was Breanna Laffey, who went a perfect 3-for-3 with one run.

Meanwhile, Greenfield-Central fought the good fight in their extra-innings match against Yorktown on Wednesday but wound up with a less-than-desirable result. They fell 7-3 to the Tigers. The game marked the Cougars' lowest-scoring contest so far this season.

Savvanna Riall made the most of her time at bat despite the final result and went 3-for-4 with one home run, two runs, and two RBI. She has been hot recently, having posted at least one home run the last four times she's played. The team also got some help courtesy of Josie White, who got on base in all five of her plate appearances with one run.

Mt. Vernon's loss dropped their record down to 3-9. As for Greenfield-Central, they are on a three-game losing streak that has dropped them down to 5-5.

Fans could be in store for some top-tier slugging on Friday. Mt. Vernon hasn't had any problems when it comes to power this season, having averaged 0.4 home runs per game. However, it's not like Greenfield-Central struggles in that department as they've been averaging 0.8 home runs. With so much power on both teams, it'll be down to the pitchers to keep the mound locked down.
