Basketball Recap: Matanzas Comes Up Short

Matanzas entered their game against Menendez on Tuesday without any home losses, but there's a first time for everything. The Matanzas Pirates were dealt a 61-27 defeat at the hands of the Menendez Falcons. While losing is never fun, the Pirates can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Florida basketball rankings (they are ranked 408th, while the Falcons are ranked 164th).

Sophia Scibelli was her usual excellent self, putting up 27 points along with eight steals and seven boards for Menendez. That makes it three consecutive games in which Scibelli has scored at least a third of Menendez's points. Jakayla Newsome was another key player, scoring 19 points and five steals.

Matanzas' loss ended a five-game streak of wins at home dating back to last season and dropped them to 7-5. As for Menendez, the victory (which was their fourth in a row) raised their record to 13-7.

Coincidentally, both will both be playing Palatka the next time they take the court. Matanzas will head out to face Palatka at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, while Menendez will host them at 6:30 p.m. on Friday.
