Baseball Recap: Orangefield's Luck Takes a Turn for the Worse on Thursday

If Orangefield was riding high fresh off their 9-2 takedown of Tarkington last Tuesday, their most recent game may have dampened their spirits a bit. The Orangefield Bobcats fell just short of the Vidor Pirates by a score of 8-6 on Thursday. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest defeat the Bobcats have suffered since March 5, 2024.

Kale Spears put in work no matter where he played. On the mound, he pitched 3.1 innings while giving up just one earned run off four hits. Spears was also solid in the batter's box, scoring two runs and stealing a base while going 2-for-3. He also stole a stolen base, marking his first of the season.

In other pitching news, Orangefield got a good showing from Jack Pate, who tossed 1.1 innings while giving up no earned runs or hits.

Back at the plate, Carson Worthy was cooking despite his team's loss, going a perfect 3-for-3 with three doubles and two RBI. Another player making a difference was Ethan Sanders, who scored a run and stole a base while going 2-for-3.

The loss snapped Orangefield's winning streak at five games dating back to last season and leaves them with a 4-1 record. Those victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 3.0 runs over those games. As for Vidor, the victory (which was their fourth in a row) raised their record to 7-2.

Orangefield didn't take long to hit the field again: they've already played their next contest, an 8-4 win against Hemphill on the 27th. As for Vidor, they will challenge West Fork at 11:00 a.m. on March 6th. Vidor's pitching crew has only allowed 2.8 runs per game this season, so West Fork's hitters will have their work cut out for them.
