Mattoon is a perfect 6-0 against Rantoul since April of 2017 and they'll have a chance to extend that dominance on Thursday. The Greenwave will head out on the road to take on the Eagles at 4:30 p.m. Both come into the matchup bolstered by wins in their previous matches.
While Mattoon's victory against Robinson wasn't quite the blowout it was the last time the pair played, they still came out on top. The Greenwave sure made it a nail-biter, but they managed to escape with an 8-6 win over the Maroons on Wednesday. The victory was a breath of fresh air for the Greenwave as it put an end to their three-game losing streak.
The team relied heavily on Derek Sharp, who got on base in all four of his plate appearances with one home run and three RBI. What's more, he posted two hits, the most he's had since back in May of 2025. Another player making a difference was Braylon Uppencamp, who went 2-for-4 with one run, one double, and one RBI.
Meanwhile, there's no place like home for Rantoul, who bounced back after a loss on the road on Monday. They blew past Gibson City-Melvin-Sibley 9-2 on Tuesday. The Eagles not only won on Tuesday, but they posted their biggest win since April 25th (when they won 11-1).
Carson Lykins was incredible, going 2-for-3 with one home run, four RBI, and one triple. The team also got some help courtesy of Levi Duitsman, who got on base in three of his four plate appearances with two stolen bases, three runs, and one RBI.
Rantoul now has a winning record of 14-13. As for Mattoon, their record now sits at 5-20.
Everything went Mattoon's way against Rantoul in their previous meeting back in May of 2025, as Mattoon made off with a 12-5 win. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Greenwave since the team won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
