Basketball Recap: Shelbyville Drops Season-High Score on Speedway

Winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask Shelbyville). They breezed past the Speedway Sparkplugs to the tune of 88-51 on Friday. The game was pretty much decided by the half, when the score had already reached 53-26.

It was another big night for Caden Claxton, who went 9 of 15 on his way to 23 points along with seven assists and seven rebounds. Another player making a difference was Gavin Reed, who made all 6 shots he took to post 16 points.

Claxton wasn't the only one working in the assist department: Shelbyville was working as a unit and finished the game with 18 assists. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Speedway only racked up five assists.

When it comes to explaining why Speedway lost, don't look at Drew Matelic. Despite the final result, he posted 18 points and three blocks. Kyle Merlie also deserves some recognition as he grabbed his first steal of the season.

Shelbyville has been performing well recently as they've won five of their last six matchups, which provided a nice bump to their 14-4 record this season. The wins came thanks in part to their offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 69.2 points over those games. As for Speedway, they dropped their record down to 2-11 with the defeat, which was their ninth straight on the road dating back to last season.

Shelbyville wasted no time getting back out on the court and has already played their next contest, a 50-33 win against Franklin County on the 5th. As for Speedway, they have also already played their next game, a 71-51 loss against Martinsville on the 6th.
