Volleyball Recap: Sturgis West Gets the Win

Sturgis West was handed a three-set loss in their previous outing, but that didn't affect their clutch gene on Monday. They sure made it a nail-biter, but they managed to escape with a 3-2 victory over the Nantucket Whalers. The game was the first time the Navigators have beaten the Whalers on their court since October 14, 2021.

Sturgis West was staring down a 2-1 deficit headed into the fourth set, but they rallied to take the next two for the win. Once all was said and done, the final score wound up at 23-25, 25-20, 26-28, 25-23, 15-6.

Noelani Kittila paced Sturgis West's offense, picking up 23 kills. Kittila got some help from Sage Hampton and her 33 assists. JoJo Sader controlled things from the service line, finishing with six aces.

Nantucket's defeat came despite a true team effort with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Viktoria Bozhkova (C), who had 14 digs, eight kills, four blocks, and four aces. Bozhkova (C) is crushing it when it comes to aces: she's served at least two every time she's taken the court this season. Another player making a difference was Mariana Silva (C), who had 13 digs and seven aces.

Sturgis West's win bumped their record up to 2-5. As for Nantucket, they are on a three-game losing streak that has dropped them down to 1-5.

Sturgis West wasted no time getting back out on the court and has already played their next match, a 3-0 victory against Rising Tide on the 24th. As for Nantucket, they will face off against Abington at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday.
