Recap: Dilley Wolves vs. Crystal City Javelinas

The Dilley Wolves pushed their score all the way to 56 on Friday, but even that wasn't enough to win. They took a serious blow against Crystal City, falling 90-56. While losing is never fun, Dilley can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Texas basketball rankings (they are ranked 1505th, while Crystal City is ranked 683rd).

Dilley's defeat came despite a true team effort from the offense, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Jacob Lopez, who scored 23 points along with five assists and five rebounds. Dorian Aranda was another key contributor, dropping a double-double on 14 points and 11 rebounds.

Crystal City found their leader in underclassman Christopher Mena, who shot 5-for-12 from long range and almost dropped a double-double on 42 points and nine assists. As a matter of fact, that's the most points Mena has scored all season. The team also got some help courtesy of Eli Mata, who scored 19 points along with five steals.

Dilley has not been sharp recently as the team has lost ten of their last 11 contests, which put a noticeable dent in their 8-20 record this season. As for Crystal City, the victory (which was their fourth in a row) raised their record to 21-12.

Both teams are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Dilley's homestand continues as they prepare to take on Hondo at 7:30 p.m. on February 13th. Hopefully Dilley focused on turnovers this week since the team gave up 36 on Friday. As for Crystal City, they will be playing at home against Natalia at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Crystal City knows how to get points on the board -- the team has finished with flashy point totals in its past ten matchups -- so hopefully Natalia likes a good challenge.
