Basketball Recap: Newcomb Takes a Loss

Newcomb came up into this matchup off a tough 34-point loss last Tuesday. This time they kept things ultra-competitive, but unfortunately the final result was the same. They fell just short of the Crownpoint Eagles by a score of 45-43 on Thursday. The Skyhawks just can't catch a break and have now endured five defeats in a row.

Crownpoint's success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Courtney Craig led the charge by putting up 11 points in addition to eight rebounds and six blocks. Crownpoint is 3-1 when Craig posts five or more blocks, but 9-11 otherwise. Holly Jiron was another key player, earning 12 points.

Newcomb's loss dropped their record down to 15-9. As for Crownpoint, they are on a roll lately: they've won three of their last four matchups, which provided a massive bump to their 12-12 record this season.

Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Newcomb will venture away from home to square off against Zuni at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Newcomb is facing Zuni at the right time seeing as Zuni is stuck on a 12-game losing streak. We've got a battle between Eagles coming up. Navajo Prep will roll in looking for their 15th straight victory, something Crownpoint surely won't give up without a fight.
