Football Recap: Mclane Skates Past Santa Maria with Ease

You can't lose the game if you win every quarter, and that was precisely McLane's strategy against Santa Maria on Friday. Given that consistent dominance, it should come as no surprise that the Highlanders blew the Saints out of the water with a 70-3 final score. With the Highlanders ahead 50-3 at the half, the contest was all but over already.

Vernon Lacy was nothing short of spectacular: he threw for 302 yards and four TDs while completing 76.5% of his passes, and also rushed for 61 yards and a pair of scores on only five carries. Lacy is crushing it when it comes to passing touchdowns: he's passed for at least four every time he's taken the field this season. Jerin Scott was Lacy's top target, picking up 71 receiving yards and one touchdown, while also rushing for 53 yards and one score.

McLane's defense stepped up as well, laying out the QB 4.5 times. Jonathan McCarthy was especially locked on to Santa Maria's QB and sacked him twice. Another thorn in the Saints' side was Sergio Jacuinde, who picked up a sack and made seven total tackles (3.0 for loss) in addition to snagging an interception which he returned one-yard for a touchdown.

The victory was the third in a row for McLane, bringing their record up to 3-0. Those wins came thanks in part to their offensive performance across that stretch, as they've averaged 61.7 points this season. As for Santa Maria, they are on a five-game losing streak (dating back to last season) that has dropped them down to 0-4.

Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. McLane will head out to square off against Sunnyside at 7:30 p.m. on Friday. This will be the Highlanders' first chance to prove their worth in the conference. As for Santa Maria, they will have a little extra prep time after the loss as they won't be playing again for a while. They'll take on Santa Ynez at 7:00 p.m. on the 26th.
