National Highlight Reel: National leader Zach Richie has 48-point outing

Teague leads Pike to title; 4-point play brings 36-35 victory; Two vaulters clear 17-1.

The nation's leading scorer, Oregon-Davis (Hamlet, Ind.) junior Zach Richie, surpassed his season average on Saturday by pouring in 48 points during a 92-73 loss to Elkhart Christian Academy (Ind.). The 6-foot-1 guard entered the game with a 43.5 average.

* Kentucky recruit Marquis Teague scored 30 points to lead Pike (Indianapolis) to a 71-61 victory over Lawrence Central (Indianapolis) in the finals of the Marion County Tournament. The outstanding 6-2 senior guard scored 28 points the previous night as Pike ended an 18-game winning streak by defending Class 4A state champion North Central (Indianapolis), 84-77.

* The Oklahoma Secondary School Activities Association has ruled that eighth-grade sensation Allonzo Trier can't play against its member high school teams, which are limited to grades 9-12. The 5-10 guard had been averaging just less than 25 points for the OKC Storm, a home-school power, and played against some Oklahoma high schools until the association was informed. He still has not decided which high school he will attend, according to the Oklahoman.

* Eric Trugg, a 6-10 junior, scored 41 points and pulled down 13 rebounds as Kenston (Chagrin Falls, Ohio) defeated West Geauga (Chesterland, Ohio), 70-54.



* Shawneil Skanes, a 5-10 senior guard, is averaging 39 points for Crooked Oak (Oklahoma City), but still is looking for a college scholarship.

* Senior guard Phillip Miller (6-1) is averaging 32.3 points for Carter (Dallas), with high games of 64 and 54 points. He also is shooting a lofty 65 percent from the field and guards each opponent's top player.

* Franklin (Seattle) junior star Anrio Adams is transferring to South Kent (Conn.), according to the Seattle Times. The 6-3 guard was averaging 23 points.

* Wake Forest signee Chase Fischer had 42 points, 12 assists and nine rebounds as Ripley (W.V.) rolled past Greenbrier East (Lewisburg, W.V.), 82-60.

* Lincoln Park (Midland, Pa.) routed Cornell (Coraopolis, Pa.), 66-38, behind Chaquille Pratt (33 points) and Devontae Watson, who had a triple-double with 17 points, 21 rebounds and 10 blocks.

* Rontray Chavis scored 41 points to lead Princeton (Ind.) to a 79-59 victory over Southridge (Huntingburg, Ind.).



* D.J. Beckman, a 6-2 sophomore, scored 21 of his 26 points in the fourth quarter to spark Shelby (Mich.) to a 62-57 victory over Whitehall (Mich.).

* Standout senior Josiah Turner has been dropped from the Sacramento High (Calif.) team for "violating athletic rules and regulations and team rules and regulations," according to the Sacramento Bee. The 6-3 guard is No. 30 in the class of 2011 basketball recruiting rankings by MaxPreps.

* Milestone coaching victories were posted last week by Walter Brower of Hampton (Va.), No. 500; Dave Kleckner of Etiwanda (Calif.), No. 400; and Mike Szabo of Trinity (Louisville, Ky.), No. 300.

Junior Sam Weerstra drilled a 3-point basket and was fouled with nine seconds left. She made her free throw and her rare 4-point play enabled Spring Lake (Mich.) to eke out a comeback 36-35 victory over Fremont (Mich.).

* Penfield (N.Y.) outlasted Irondequoit (Rochester, N.Y.), 73-70, in triple overtime on a 3-point basket from just beyond half-court by sophomore guard Katie Kayes.

* Senior guard Kari Luttinen scored 40 points to lead Seattle Prep to a 78-43 rout of Chief Sealth (Seattle).
 
* Though she's just a junior, Hayden Hamby of West Morgan (Trinity, Ala.) scored the 3,000th point of her career last week. The 5-7 standout has started since she was in eighth grade.



* Princeton (Cincinnati) is unbeaten with a pair of freshmen making waves. Kelsey Mitchell, a 5-7 guard, is averaging 18 points, four assists and three steals, while her 5-10 twin sister, Chelsea Mitchell, is averaging six points as a key substitute. They honed their skills going against twin brothers Cameron and Kevin, who now play for Walsh University. Their father, Mark Mitchell, is the head boys basketball coach at Taft (Cincinnati, Ohio).

During the Arkansas High School Invitational in Fayetteville, Mount Ida (Ark.) senior Andrew Irwin won the pole vault competition by clearing 17 feet, 1 inch to share the 2011 national indoor leadership.

Santa Fe (Edmond, Okla.) senior Gunnar Nixon won the high jump (6 feet, 10 inches) and 60-meter hurdles (7.99 seconds) as he will attempt to break the national pentathlon record this spring. Lancaster (Texas) sophomore Devin Fields won the long jump with a leap of 24 feet, 3 1/4 inches.

* Jordan Yamoah of Arlington (LaGrangeville, N.Y.) also shares the national pole vault lead after clearing 17 feet, 1 inch during the Molloy Stanner Games at the New Balance Armory in New York City. The height also broke his own New York state indoor record.

Maine South (Park Ridge, Ill.), which has won the last three Class 8A state football titles, has been placed on probation until Dec. 1, 2011 by the Illinois High School Association, according to the Chicago Sun-Times.

Violations included using counterfeit sideline passes at the state finals and failure to follow rules on the number of coaches allowed on the field and in the press box. Head coach Dave Inserra and assistant Rick Magsamen have been suspended for the 2011 season-opening game.



* Highly successful Morgan Park (Chicago) coach Lexie Spurlock has been fired despite a 147-59 record, 11 consecutive state playoff berths, three Chicago Public League titles and sending six players to the NFL.

* Opponents are going to see red when they travel to Canyon (New Braunfels, Texas), because the Cougars have just installed a new artificial red turf with white hash marks and black end zones with white lettering. They will be greeted at the 50-yard line with the school logo in red, black and white.

POTPOURRI
* St. Thomas Aquinas (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) was nipped, 1-0, by San Clemente (Calif.) during the Red Bull Nolan Soccer Showcase in Fort Worth, Texas. The St. Thomas girls had won their first 18 games, outscoring their opponents by a huge 121-0 margin.

* Honeoye Falls-Lima (N.Y.) defeated Livonia (N.Y.), 107-79, to give swim coach Norm Schueckler his 300th victory.

* Sophomore goalie Ryan Seltenreich made a spectacular 48 saves as Chatfield (Littleton, Colo.) edged Standley Lake (Westminster, Colo.), 3-2.
