Football Preview: Lewisburg Patriots vs. Oxford Chargers
Lewisburg is 0-6 against Oxford since October of 2014 but things could change on Friday. The Lewisburg Patriots will take on the Oxford Chargers at 7:00 p.m.
Last Friday, Lewisburg ended up a good deal behind Horn Lake and lost 39-21. The Patriots have now taken an 'L' in back-to-back games.
Despite their loss, Lewisburg saw several players rise to the challenge and make noteworthy plays. Cael Riden, who picked up 83 receiving yards and two touchdowns, was perhaps the best of all. The bulk of those receiving yards came from one huge play: a catch that gained an incredible 76 yards. Lewisburg also got help from Andrew Hendrichovsky, who showed off his sure hands for 100 receiving yards.
Meanwhile, Oxford waltzed into their contest on Friday with two straight wins... but they left with three. They blew past the Chargers 35-14. Given Oxford's advantage in MaxPreps' Mississippi football rankings (they are ranked 26th, while Southaven is ranked 105th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Oxford found their leader in sophomore Drew Dean, who threw for 200 yards and two touchdowns while completing 73.9% of his passes, and also rushed for 36 yards.
On the defensive side of the ball, a lot of the credit has to go to Oxford's defense and their four sacks. Leading the way was Zayvien Cristal with two. Another thorn in Southaven's side was Jai Johnson, who picked up a sack and made 12 total tackles.
Lewisburg's defeat dropped their record down to 1-7. As for Oxford, the win got them back to even at 4-4.
Lewisburg came up short against Oxford when the teams last played back in October of 2023, falling 35-28. Can Lewisburg avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
