Greene County is on an eight-game streak of home wins, while Northeast Jones is on a four-game streak of away wins: one of those streaks is about to end. The Wildcats will host the Tigers at 6:30 p.m. on Friday. The two teams have allowed few runs on average (Greene County 4, Northeast Jones 3.5) so any runs scored will be well earned.
On Thursday, Greene County was able to grind out a solid win over Poplarville, taking the game 9-4.
Addie Tungett made a splash while hitting and pitching. She looked comfortable on the mound, striking out eight batters over seven innings while giving up just two earned (and two unearned) runs off two hits. Tungett was also big at the plate, scoring three runs and stealing a base while going 2-for-3. That's the most runs she has posted since back in March.
In other batting news, Greene County got a big performance out of Kambrie Lawrence, who scored two runs while going 2-for-3. Erin Meadows was another key player, scoring a run while going 2-for-4.
Meanwhile, Northeast Jones posted their closest victory since April 15, 2024 on Thursday. They had just enough and edged out Mendenhall 6-5. Northeast Jones hasn't had any issues with Mendenhall recently, as the game was their seventh consecutive win against them.
Like Greene County, Northeast Jones also got a great game from a two-way player: Caroline Myrick. On the mound, she struck out seven batters over seven innings while giving up four earned (and one unearned) runs off four hits. Myrick has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't tossed less than six strikeouts in three consecutive appearances. She was also solid in the batter's box, scoring a run and stealing a base while getting on base in three of her four plate appearances.
In other batting news, Hannah Harrison was excellent, scoring a run while going 2-for-4. Another player making a difference was Cheerae Jones, who went 2-for-3 with one RBI.
Greene County has been performing well recently as they've won 11 of their last 14 matches. That's provided a nice bump to their 13-7 record this season. Those victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 8.5 runs over those games. As for Northeast Jones, their win bumped their record up to 17-3-1.
Greene County was able to grind out a solid victory over Northeast Jones when the teams last played back in April of 2024, winning 4-1. Will the Wildcats repeat their success, or do the Tigers have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
