Baseball Recap: Varela Comes Up Short

Varela and Mater Academy Charter squared off in some playoff action on Wednesday, but Varela had to settle for second. They took a 5-2 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Lions. Having soared to a lofty 12 runs in the game before, the Vipers couldn't push the score so high this time.

Varela saw four different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Yoidi Martinez, who went 1-for-3 with one run. Juan Chacon was another, getting on base in two of his three plate appearances with one stolen base and one RBI.

Varela's loss dropped their record down to 20-9-2. As for Mater Academy Charter, they have been performing incredibly well recently as they've won 13 of their last 15 contests. That's provided a nice bump to their 22-9-1 record this season.

While Varela had to take the loss, they won't have to wait long to give it another shot: the pair's next game is a rematch scheduled at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday.
