Basketball Recap: Southside Sets Scoring Season-High Against Lejeune

Winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask Southside). They strolled past the Lejeune Devil Pups with points to spare on Tuesday, taking the game 66-49. That's the second time they've managed to beat them this season, as they also won 63-32 back in January.

Southside got their victory on the backs of several key players, but it was Lily McLean out in front who dropped a double-double on 17 points and 20 rebounds. McLean's evening made it three games in a row in which she has scored at least ten points. I'Kiriyah Minor was another key player, putting up 19 points in addition to eight boards and five steals.

Southside smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 23 offensive boards. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least nine offensive rebounds in 15 consecutive games.

When it comes to explaining why Lejeune lost, don't look at Madison McQueen. Despite the final result, she posted 34 points along with seven rebounds and six steals. That was a full 69.4% of Lejeune's points, marking the fifth time in a row she's put up more than a third of the team's points. Another player making a difference was Scarlett McLean, who scored nine points in addition to six steals and five boards.

Southside has been performing well recently as they've won ten of their last 13 contests, which provided a nice bump to their 12-6 record this season. The wins came thanks to their offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 52.7 points per game. As for Lejeune, they dropped their record down to 2-15 with the loss, which was their ninth straight at home dating back to last season.

Coincidentally, Southside and Lejeune will both be playing East Carteret the next time they take the court. Lejeune will host East Carteret at 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday, while Southside will host them at 6:00 p.m. on Friday.
