MaxPreps 2012 All-NorCal Football Team

Anybody who went to he California State Championship Bowl Games this season should recognize lots of the names we have on the All-Northern California Football Team. Even moreso if you also saw the Regional Bowl Games.

MaxPreps staffers and the Sacramento Bee's Joe Davidson all teamed up to develop the team .

Offensive Player of the Year

Jake Browning, QB, Folsom, 6-1, 180, Sophomore
Browning started the season with a national record-tying 10 touchdown passes and passing for 699 yards to beat Woodcreek (Roseville). Browning connected on 391 of 605 passes for 63 touchdowns and 16 interceptions, was named to the MaxPreps Sophomore All-American Team and was the Offensive Player of the Year for The Sacramento Bee and on the MaxPreps All-Sac-Joaquin Section team.



Defensive Player of the Year
Michael Hutchings, LB, De La Salle (Concord), 6-2, 215, Senior
The USC commit keyed the Spartans' 15-0 season, another CIF Open Division championship and national No. 1 finish by MaxPreps. He had 113 tackles and three interceptions.

Coaches of the Year
Open - Bob Ladouceur, De La Salle (Concord)
CIF Open Division Bowl four-peat, 15-0 season, retires with career record of 399-25-3.

Large School - Ernie Cooper, Granite Bay
Division I CIF State Bowl champions.

Medium School - Trent Merzon, Oakdale
NorCal Regional D-II champions, State Bowl participant.

Small school - Roger Canepa, Central Catholic (Modesto)
D-IV CIF State Bowl champions.

Offense

Jared Goff, QB, Marin Catholic (Kentfield), 6-5, 195, Senior
The Cal-bound star passed for 3,692 yards and 40 touchdowns in leading his club to a CIF State Bowl game and earning San Francisco Chronicle Player of the Year honors. For his career, Goff passed for 7,066 yards and 93 touchdowns with a 39-4 record.



Tiapepe Vitale, RB, De La Salle (Concord), 6-0, 195, Senior
Vitale rushed for a school-record 2,102 yards and 33 touchdowns for a Spartans team that went 15-0 and won another CIF State Open Division Bowl championship. He made the Chronicle All-Metro and Bay Area News Group team.

Justin Ewing, RB, Capuchino (San Bruno), 6-0, 195, Senior
In leading the Mustangs to their first league championship since 1958, Ewing set Central Coast Section records for yards rushing in a game (494 against Gunn) and season (2,956). He earned first team honors by the Chronicle.

Joe Protheroe, RB, Clayton Valley (Concord), 6-1, 205, Senior
Protheroe rushed for a NorCal-leading 3,014 yards and 34 touchdowns for a club that reached the D-II Regional Bowl. He was named Offensive Player of the Year by the Bay Area News Group and was Chronicle All-Metro.

Darrell Daniels, WR, Freedom (Oakley), 6-3, 215, Senior
The Washington-bound star had 53 catches for 947 yards and 11 touchdowns for a playoff team. He pulled in scoring passes in nine games in earning first-team honors by the Bay Area News Group and the Chronicle.

Troy Knox, WR, Folsom, 5-8, 160, Junior
Knox caught a section-best 104 passes for 1,249 yards and 15 touchdowns for a Bulldogs team that went 14-1 and won the D-II Sac-Joaquin Section title. His 1,249 yards were second overall in the section. He was named first team Sacramento Bee All-Metro.

Aaron Maher, WR, Analy (Sebastopol), 6-3, 190, Senior
Maher caught 53 passes for 1,196 yards and 16 touchdowns for a 12-1 team.



Johnny Mundt, TE, Central Catholic (Modesto), 6-5, 235, Senior
The Oregon commit did it all for the D-IV CIF State Bowl champions: Blocking, pulling in 33 receptions for 625 yards and eight touchdowns, and he also had 15.5 sacks on defense. Mundt was named the Western League's Most Valuable Player.

Aaron Cochran, OL, Buhach Colony (Atwater), 6-8, 340, Senior
The Cal commit was a huge piece in the Thunder's offense, which racked up 4,170 yards on the ground. He was named Central California's Lineman of the Year.

Gunnar Graham, OL, Marin Catholic (Kentfield), 6-5, 280, Senior
The Colorado commit was paramount in keeping quarterback Jared Goff upright. He earned Chronicle All-Metro honors.

Dominic Luca, OL, Bellarmine (San Jose), 6-1, 225, Senior
The West Catholic Athletic League Offensive Line MVP powered his balanced team to the playoffs. He was named to the All-San Jose Mercury News and Chronicle teams.

David Ogburn, OL, De La Salle (Concord), 6-1, 225, Senior
Ogburn was paramount to the run success of the Spartans, who went 15-0 and won NorCal Regional and CIF State Open Division titles. He was named to the Bay Area News Group and Chronicle first teams.

Josh Wormley, OL, Folsom, 6-1, 260, Senior
Wormley went by "The Big Lovely" by his teammates and coaches and was a big reason Folsom passed for 5,248 yards and ran for 1,991 in 2012, going 14-1. He was named to the Sacramento Bee All-Metro team.



Brandon Monroe, ATH (RB/DB), Del Oro (Loomis), 6-1, 190, Senior
The Sacramento Bee Player of the Year rushed for 1,545 yards and 17 touchdowns despite missing three games with a knee strain. Monroe carried the Eagles on his back as they made a late postseason run. He was also named the Sierra Foothill League's Offensive Player of the Year.

Warren Long, ATH (RB/LB), Logan (Union City), 5-11, 205, Senior
The Northwestern-bound Long rushed for nearly 2,100 yards and 24 touchdowns, was second on the team in tackles and powered the Colts to a 12-1 start before falling to De La Salle.

Colin Brown, K, Granite Bay, 6-0, 150, Senior
Brown connected on 10 of 13 field goals this season, including 41- and 37-yard field goals in the CIF Division I State Bowl win over Long Beach Poly.

Defense

Eddie Vanderdoes, DL, Placer (Auburn), 6-3, 304, Senior
Vanderdoes saw double teams all year but was still a major force for the Pioneer Valley League champs. The top national recruit finished with 72 tackles and nine sacks for an 11-1 team. Vanderdoes was the Defensive MVP in the Pioneer Valley League, was named first team All-Metro by The Sacramento Bee and dominated the US Army All-American game.

Austin Hooper, DL, De La Salle (Concord), 6-4, 245, Senior
The Stanford-bound recruit missed some games with a knee strain but was healthy, active and unstoppable in the playoffs for a 15-0 team that finished nationally ranked No. 1 by MaxPreps.

Zack Claiborne, DL, Oak Ridge (El Dorado Hills), 6-1, 195, Senior
In being named The Sacramento Bee's Defensive Player of the Year, Claiborne set an all-time Sacramento-area record with 25.5 sacks for a 12-2 team. That total led the state this season.



Vita Vea, DL, Milpitas, 6-4, 285, Senior
As versatile as he was brutish, Vea had 89 tackles and eight sacks and also power-rushed for 578 yards and 11 scores in earning first-team All-Metro honors by the Chronicle and San Jose Mercury News.

Derik Calhoun, LB, El Cerrito, 6-0, 200, Junior
A powerful hitter and playmaker who could defend the run or drop back into coverage, Calhoun made first-team Chronicle All-Metro.

Ryan Bua, LB, Logan (Union City), 6-0, 200, Senior
The heart and soul of a Colts team that started 12-1 before falling to De La Salle in the North Coast Section playoffs. He made first-team All-Metro for the Chronicle.

Tanner Vallejo, LB, Nevada Union (Grass Valley), 6-3, 215, Senior
The Boise State commit was named to the Sacramento Bee All-Metro team and the Sierra Foothill League's Defensive Player of the Year. Vallejo finished with 129 total tackles.

Jeff Camilli, LB, Ponderosa (Shingle Springs), 6-4, 235, Senior
The Fresno State commit was Co-Defensive MVP in the Delta River League and a Sacramento Bee All-Metro choice after posting 123 tackles. The senior also scored eight rushing touchdowns.

Joey Banks, LB, Franklin (Elk Grove), 5-9, 185, Junior
Banks led the 12-1 Wildcats with 135 tackles as a second-year starter. He also had six sacks and was named to the Sacramento Bee All-Metro team.



Landon Baty, DB, St. Francis (Mountain View), 5-11, 185, Junior
The Most Valuable Defensive Back from the brutally competitive West Catholic Athletic League was named first team to the Chronicle All-Metro team.

Kevin King, DB, Bishop O'Dowd (Oakland), 6-2, 175, Senior
Washington-bound recruit was a first-team Chronicle All-Metro pick.

Aaron Knapp, DB, Granite Bay, 5-10, 170, Senior
A verbal baseball commit to Cal, Knapp was a playmaking leader for the CIF D-I state champions, averaging five tackles and coming up with seven interceptions in earning Sacramento Bee All-Metro and MaxPreps All-Sac-Joaquin Section honors.

Joey Abbate, DB, Central Catholic (Modesto), 5-7, 155, Senior
Abbate led the state with 11 interceptions. He had six of those picks during the postseason, including two in the state finals. He was named to the MaxPreps All-Sac-Joaquin Section team.

Kenneth Olugbode, ATH, Bellarmine (San Jose), 6-1, 215, Senior
The West Catholic Athletic League Player of the Year, Mercury News Player of the Year and a San Jose State verbal was a top defender who also rushed for 739 yards and 10 touchdowns.

Jacob Sipes, P, Oak Ridge (El Dorado Hills), 6-4, 175, Junior
Sipes led the section with an average of 45.6 yards per punt. He also pinned opponents inside the 20-yard line 10 times.
