Football Game Preview: Varela Vipers vs. JC Bermudez Doral Thunder

The Varela Vipers will challenge the JC Bermudez Doral Thunder at 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday. The teams are on pretty different trajectories at the moment (Varela has six straight wins, JC Bermudez Doral has eight straight defeats), but none of that matters once you're on the field.

JC Bermudez Doral's offense is going to have their work cut out for them on Tuesday: Varela hadn't allowed a single point the last six times they've hit the field. The Vipers never let Southwest get on the board and left with a 25-0 victory on Thursday. The Vipers might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won four matchups by 20 points or more this season.

Varela found their leader in freshman Angelyn Molina, who threw for 220 yards and a pair of touchdowns while picking up 11.0 yards per attempt. Molina's passing game has become a key predictor of the Vipers' success: the team is undefeated when her passer rating is 100 or higher, but only 2-3 otherwise.

On the defensive side of the ball, a lot of the credit has to go to Varela's defense and their four sacks. In fact, those sacks all came courtesy of defensive juggernaut Elisa Thompson.

Meanwhile, JC Bermudez Doral was just a hair shy of victory on Friday and fell 7-6 to Downtown Doral.

Varela's win was their third straight at home, which pushed their record up to 7-3. Those home victories came thanks in part to their defensive effort, having only surrendered 0.0 points on average over those games. As for JC Bermudez Doral, their loss dropped their record down to 0-6.
