Mitchell hasn't had much luck against Madison recently, but that could start to change on Tuesday. The Mountaineers will be playing in front of their home fans against the Patriots at 4:30 p.m. Mitchell is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 7.3 runs per game this season.
Freedom hit Mitchell with a five-run second inning on Wednesday, which goes a long way in explaining the final result. The Mountaineers came up short against the Patriots, falling 10-4.
Kaj Pitman was cooking despite his team's loss, getting on base in all four of his plate appearances with one stolen base and one run. He is on a roll when it comes to stolen bases, as he's now snagged at least one in each of the last three games he's played.
Meanwhile, winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask Madison). They put the hurt on Rosman with a sharp 22-2 victory on Monday. The win continues a trend for the Patriots in their matchups with the Tigers: they've now won eight in a row.
Max Shelton was incredible, firing off two home runs, four runs, and four RBI while going 3-for-3. He is becoming a predictor of Madison's success: when he posts at least three hits the team is 4-1 (and 4-10 when he doesn't). Another player making a difference was Jaxon Dillingham, who went 1-for-2 with one home run and three RBI.
Madison always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .636. The last time their OBP was this high was back in April of 2024.
Mitchell's defeat dropped their record down to 9-9. As for Madison, their victory bumped their record up to 8-11.
The pitchers for both teams better look sharp on Tuesday as neither team is afraid to steal. Mitchell has been swiping bases left and right this season, having averaged 4.1 stolen bases per game. However, it's not like Madison struggles in that department as they've been averaging 2.7 stolen bases. The only question left is which team can snag more.
Mitchell might still be hurting after the 11-3 loss they got from Madison in their previous meeting back in April of 2024. Can the Mountaineers avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
