Basketball Recap: Newton Takes a Loss

Newton was not able to break out of their rough patch on Friday as the team picked up their 12th straight defeat dating back to last season. They were outmatched by the Pollok Central Bulldogs and fell 59-21. While losing is never fun, the Eagles can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Texas basketball rankings (they are ranked 1630th, while the Bulldogs are ranked 571st).

Pollok Central was led to victory by Jake Matthews and Wyatt Graham. Matthews went 6 for 10 on his way to 15 points and five steals, while Graham went 5 of 9 en route to 15 points along with five rebounds and five steals. Pollok Central is 16-7 when Matthews posts five or more steals, but 2-3 otherwise. Micah Putnam was another key player, putting up seven points and three steals.

Newton's loss dropped their record down to 0-7. As for Pollok Central, the victory was the fourth in a row for them, bringing their record for this year to 18-10.

Coincidentally, the two teams will both be playing Pineywoods Community Academy the next time they take the court. Newton will host Pineywoods Community Academy at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, while Pollok Central will head out to face them at 7:15 p.m. on January 31st.
