Softball Recap: Riverside-Durham Drops Highest Score of Season Against Hillside

Winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask Riverside-Durham). Everything went their way against the Hillside Hornets on Tuesday as Riverside-Durham made off with an 18-0 win. The victory continues a trend for the Pirates in their matchups with the Hornets: they've now won six in a row.

Grace Arrington made a big impact while hitting and pitching. She struck out six batters over three innings while giving up no earned runs or hits. She has been consistent recently: she hasn't tossed less than six strikeouts in three consecutive appearances. She was also big at the plate, scoring three runs and stealing a base while getting on base in three of her four plate appearances. That's the most runs she has posted since back in March of 2024.

In other batting news, Riverside-Durham let Grayson Knotts and Juleah Somers run wild. Knotts fired off two home runs and three runs while going 3-for-4, while Somers scored three runs and stole three bases while going 2-for-2. That's the most stolen bases Somers has posted since back in March of 2024. Nehir Volkan also deserves some recognition as she hit her first double of the season.

Riverside-Durham always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .655. That was just more of the same: they've now posted an OBP of .528 or higher in three consecutive games.

Riverside-Durham pushed their record up to 4-2 with the win, which was their fourth straight on the road dating back to last season. The victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 18.0 runs over those games. As for Hillside, their loss was their first of the season and makes their record 5-1.

Coming up, Riverside-Durham will challenge Chapel Hill at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday. Riverside-Durham's pitchers better be ready for this one: Chapel Hill has averaged an impressive 7.1 runs per game this season. As for Hillside, they are taking a road trip to challenge Northern Durham at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday. Northern Durham has struggled to contain batters this season (they've allowed 9.78 runs per game on average), something Hillside will no doubt try to take advantage of.
