Baseball Game Preview: Iola Bulldogs vs. Round Top-Carmine Cubs

For the second straight game, Iola will face off against Round Top-Carmine. The Bulldogs will be playing at home against the Cubs at 6:00 p.m. on Friday. The teams are on pretty different trajectories at the moment (Iola has five straight wins, Round Top-Carmine has five straight defeats), but none of that matters once you're on the field.

Iola barely beat Round Top-Carmine the last time the pair played, but that sure wasn't the case this time around. The Bulldogs' pitchers stepped up to hand the Cubs a 16-0 shutout on Tuesday.

Brody Vaughn made a big impact while hitting and pitching. He looked comfortable on the mound, striking out eight batters over three innings while giving up no earned runs or hits (and only one walk). He has been nothing but reliable: he hasn't given up more than one earned run in six consecutive appearances. He was also stellar in the batter's box, going 2-for-3 with one home run, five RBI, and three runs. Those five RBI gave him a new career-high.

In other batting news, Colt Childress and Colin Fowler did most of the damage at the plate: Childress scored three runs while going 1-for-1, while Fowler went a perfect 3-for-3 with one stolen base, one double, and one RBI. Those three runs gave Childress a new career-high. The team also got some help courtesy of Eddie Longoria, who scored a run while going 1-for-1.

Iola always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .600. That's the best OBP they've posted all season.

Iola's victory was their third straight on the road, which pushed their record up to 12-3. The road wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 1.3 runs on average over those games. As for Round Top-Carmine, their loss dropped their record down to 3-9.
