Softball Recap: Kalamazoo Christian Extends Home Winning Streak to Five

After having lost a blowout in their previous game against Mendon, Kalamazoo Christian was happy to have turned things around on Tuesday. They blew past the Gull Lake Blue Devils 16-6. The result was nothing new for the Comets, who have now won 15 contests by seven runs or more so far this season.

Carien Ybema made a big impact no matter where she played. She tossed six innings while giving up just one earned (and five unearned) runs off five hits. Ybema was also big at the plate, getting on base in three of her four plate appearances with three runs and two RBI. Those three runs gave her a new career-high.

In other batting news, Reese Gernaat was incredible, getting on base in three of her four plate appearances with three runs, one stolen base, and two RBI. That's the most runs she has posted over her last 12 matches. Another player making a difference was Madalyn Vlietstra, who went 2-for-4 with three RBI and one run.

Kalamazoo Christian was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .400. That was just more of the same: they've now posted a batting average of .400 or higher in four consecutive games.

Kalamazoo Christian's win was their fifth straight at home, which pushed their record up to 22-9. Those home victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 11.6 runs over those games. As for Gull Lake, they have traveled a rocky road recently, having lost five of their last six contests. That's put a noticeable dent in their 3-15-2 record this season.

Kalamazoo Christian will have a chance to go back-to-back against Gull Lake: the pair will be back at it again later today.
