Basketball Preview: Sierra Canyon Trailblazers vs. St. John Bosco Braves

Sierra Canyon has enjoyed the comforts of home their last two games, but now they'll head out on the road. They will challenge the St. John Bosco Braves at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. Keep an eye on the score for this one: the two teams posted some lofty point totals in their previous games.

Last Wednesday, Sierra Canyon faced the Celts in a battle between two of the state's top teams. Sierra Canyon fell just short of the Celts by a score of 64-61. The loss was a bit of a surprise, as Sierra Canyon came into the match with a sizable advantage in MaxPreps' California basketball rankings (they are ranked fourth, while the Celts are ranked 25th).

Meanwhile, St. John Bosco put the finishing touches on their 12th blowout victory of the season on Thursday. They claimed a resounding 87-59 win over Orange Lutheran at home. The matchup was all but wrapped up at the end of the third, by which point St. John Bosco had established a 22 point advantage.

St. John Bosco's success was spearheaded by the efforts of Elzie Harrington, who scored 19 points along with seven steals, and Brandon McCoy Jr, who scored 27 points along with three blocks. McCoy Jr has been hot recently, having posted 19 or more points the last five times he's played. The team also got some help courtesy of Jack Turner, who scored 11 points.

Sierra Canyon's defeat ended a 26-game streak of wins at home dating back to last season and dropped them to 24-2. As for St. John Bosco, their win was their tenth straight at home, which pushed their record up to 23-5.

Sierra Canyon strolled past the Braves when the teams last played back in May of 2021 by a score of 60-46. The rematch might be a little tougher for Sierra Canyon since the team won't have the home-court advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
