Basketball Recap: Salem Comes Up Short

Salem was not able to break out of their rough patch on Tuesday as the team picked up their fourth straight loss. They took a 51-43 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Kellam Knights. While losing is never fun, the Sundevils can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Virginia basketball rankings (they are ranked 69th, while the Knights are ranked 18th).

Kellam's win was a true team effort, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Mia Spain, who went 7 of 15 en route to 18 points along with six steals and five assists. Spain is on a roll when it comes to steals, as she's now grabbed two or more in the last 12 games she's played dating back to last season. The team also got some help courtesy of Kate Spain, who almost dropped a double-double on nine points and nine boards.

Salem's defeat was their first in the region, dropping their region record down to 5-1 and their overall record down to 6-5. As for Kellam, their victory was their tenth straight on the road dating back to last season, which pushed their record up to 10-0.

Both teams are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Salem will welcome Ocean Lakes at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. As for Kellam, they will look to defend their home court on Friday against Princess Anne at 7:00 p.m. Princess Anne will roll in looking for their 12th straight win, something Kellam surely won't give up without a fight.
