Baseball Recap: Paul Laurence Dunbar Takes a Loss

Paul Laurence Dunbar was the 4-3 winner over Mercer County when they last played one another back in May of 2024, but their luck changed this time around. The Paul Laurence Dunbar Bulldogs fell just short of the Mercer County Titans by a score of 12-11 on Tuesday. The Bulldogs have now taken an 'L' in back-to-back games.

Nick Sawyers was huge while hitting and pitching even without the win. He struck out six batters over four innings while giving up just two earned runs off five hits (and only one walk). Those six strikeouts gave him a new career-high. He was also solid in the batter's box, scoring two runs while going 1-for-4.

In other batting news, Tyler Baker stepped up to lead a balanced group of hitters: he scored two runs while getting on base in three of his five plate appearances. Nick Griffith was another key player, scoring a run and stealing a base while getting on base in three of his five plate appearances.

Paul Laurence Dunbar now has a losing record of 1-2. As for Mercer County, the win (which was their third in a row) raised their record to 3-0.

Both squads are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Paul Laurence Dunbar will challenge Hazard at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday. As for Mercer County, they will take on Bourbon County at 12:00 p.m. on Saturday.
