For the first time this season, Arvada West will have a chance to prove themselves in a conference matchup. They will head out on the road to take on the Chatfield Chargers at 4:00 p.m. on Thursday. Arvada West is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 6.7 runs per game this season.
Arvada West is probably headed into the match with a chip on their shoulder considering Fort Collins just ended the team's five-game winning streak on Tuesday. They fell just short of the Lambkins by a score of 5-4.
Keegan Millikan made the most of his time at bat despite the final result and went 1-for-3 with one triple, two RBI, and one run. Cameron Thornton also deserves some recognition as he hit his first double of the season.
While Chatfield didn't have the best season last year (they finished 8-15), it's starting to look like those struggles are a thing of the past. Everything went their way against Monarch on Monday as they made off with an 11-4 win. That's two games straight that the Chargers have won by exactly seven runs.
Colin Metz was a standout: he went 2-for-3 with one home run, two runs, and one stolen base. He has become a key player for Chatfield: the team is undefeated when he posts at least two runs, but 2-4 otherwise. Isaac Low was another key player, scoring two runs and stealing a base while going 2-for-3.
Chatfield pushed their record up to 7-4 with the victory, which was their sixth straight at home dating back to last season. The home wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 3.8 runs on average over those games. As for Arvada West, their loss dropped their record down to 7-2-1.
Thursday's game will be a test for both teams' pitchers. Arvada West hasn't had any issues making contact this season, having earned a batting average of .332. However, it's not like Chatfield struggles in that department as they've averaged .327. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
Arvada West came out on top in a nail-biter against Chatfield when the teams last played back in May of 2024, sneaking past 2-0. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Wildcats since the team won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
