Basketball Recap: Caleb Maholmes' Big Game Can't Quite Lead West over Pittsburg

West fought the good fight in their overtime match against Pittsburg on Friday but wound up with a less-than-desirable result. They took a 53-46 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Pittsburg Dragons. The Pioneers were given a dose of their own medicine in this game as the Dragons apparently hadn't forgotten their defeat the last time these teams played back in January of 2022.

Several Pioneers players turned in solid performances despite ultimately coming up short. Perhaps the best among those players was Caleb Maholmes, who dropped a double-double on 11 points and 16 rebounds. The dominant performance also gave Maholmes a new career-high in assists (four). Another player making a difference was Treg Hardeman, who posted 12 points.

This is the second loss in a row for West and nudges their season record down to 3-8. As for Pittsburg, the win (which was their third in a row) raised their record to 5-5.

West has already played their next game, a 65-28 loss against Joplin on the 25th. As for Pittsburg, they also wasted no time getting back out on the court and have already played their next contest, a 75-48 defeat against Branson on the 25th.
