Softball Game Preview: Truckee Wolverines vs. Foothill Cougars

The Truckee Wolverines will be taking part in a tournament against the Foothill Cougars at 2:00 p.m. on Friday. Truckee will be looking to extend their current five-game winning streak.

While Truckee's victory against Hug wasn't quite the blowout it was the last time the pair played, they still came out on top. The Wolverines had just enough and edged out the Hawks 5-4 on Wednesday. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest win the Wolverines have posted since March 23, 2024.

Meanwhile, winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask Foothill). They were the clear victors by a 15-9 margin over Chico on Wednesday. Considering the Cougars have won six matches by more than five runs this season, Wednesday's blowout was nothing new.

Elisea Wiegand was a major factor while hitting and pitching. On the mound, she struck out ten batters over seven innings while giving up just two earned (and seven unearned) runs off seven hits. She has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't tossed less than five strikeouts in 12 consecutive appearances. She was also stellar in the batter's box, going 3-for-4 with four runs, two doubles, and one RBI. That's the most doubles she has posted since back in March.

In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Taylor Bates, who went a perfect 5-for-5 with two stolen bases, four RBI, and two runs. Those five hits gave her a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Rylee Vakulich, who went 2-for-4 with three runs, one double, and one RBI.

Foothill kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 17 hits. That's the most hits they've managed all season.

Foothill pushed their record up to 13-4-1 with the victory, which was their sixth straight at home. Those home wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 2.8 runs on average over those games. As for Truckee, their record is now 6-8.
