New Albany came out on top against Charlestown on Saturday thanks in part to the team's impressive four-run second inning. The Bulldogs won by a run and slipped past the Pirates 7-6. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest win the Bulldogs have posted since May 6, 2024.

Tyler McMillen made a big impact while hitting and pitching. He didn't allow a single earned run while striking out eight over four innings pitched. He has been consistent recently: he hasn't given up more than one walk in four consecutive appearances. He was also big at the plate, going 2-for-3 with two RBI and one run.

In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Gavin Rand, who went 2-for-3 with one home run and three runs. That home run was his first of the season. Another player making a difference was Braden Brewer, who went 2-for-3 with three RBI and one double.

New Albany is on a roll lately: they've won three of their last four matches. That's provided a nice bump to their 5-3 record this season. The victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 3.8 runs on average over those games. As for Charlestown, their loss ended a six-game streak of wins at home dating back to last season and dropped them to 8-2.

Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. New Albany will venture away from home to take on Jeffersonville at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday. As for Charlestown, they will head out to challenge North Harrison at 5:30 p.m. on Monday. The Cougars will roll in looking for their fourth straight win, something the Pirates surely won't give up without a fight.
