Basketball Recap: Westlake Demons vs. Elyria Pioneers

Westlake played a tough contest on Tuesday in which they were outscored in every quarter. They had to suffer through an 80-42 loss at the hands of the Elyria Pioneers. The Demons were in a tough position after the first half, with the score already sitting at 42-22.

Several Demons players turned in solid performances despite ultimately coming up short. Perhaps the best among those players was Hayden Purdy, who almost dropped a double-double with 14 points and nine rebounds. Purdy is also on a roll when it comes to field goal percentage, as he's posted one of at least 45% in the last five games he's played. Another player making a difference was Evan Hargett, who posted 11 points.

Elyria's success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Kendyll Compton led the charge by going 6 of 11 on his way to 18 points along with six boards and four steals. That's the most steals Compton has posted since back in December of 2024. The team also got some help courtesy of Jayden Crutcher, who went 6 for 11 en route to 17 points.

Westlake's defeat dropped their record down to 14-7. As for Elyria, they have been performing well recently as they've won nine of their last 11 matches, which provided a nice bump to their 15-5 record this season.

Westlake and Elyria should be looking forward to their upcoming games as both have a sizable advantage in the MaxPreps Ohio Rankings. Westlake (ranked 223rd) will meet North Olmsted (ranked 516th) at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. Similarly, Elyria will take on Midview at 7:00 p.m. on Friday up 614 places (97 vs. 711).
