Baseball Recap: West Takes a Loss

West extended their losing streak to three on Friday, dropping their season record down to 7-13 in the process. They were a single run away from ending the streak, but they lost a 7-6 heartbreaker at the hands of the Redondo Union Sea Hawks. Unfortunately, that's the third time they've come up short against the Sea Hawks this season, with their most recent loss being a 4-1 defeat on Wednesday.

Reef Sharman and Alberto Gomez did some serious damage despite the final result: Sharman went 2-for-4 with two RBI, one run, and one double, while Gomez went 2-for-3 with one run, one double, and one RBI.

As for Redondo Union, the victory was the fourth in a row for them, bringing their record up to 11-10. Those wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 7.3 runs over those games.

On Redondo Union's side, Robby Zimmerman tossed a big game, striking out ten batters over 6.1 innings while giving up just one earned run off four hits (and only one walk). Zimmerman also tossed a walk, which is notable because the Sea Hawks are 4-2 when he allows at most one walk, but 7-8 otherwise.

At the plate, the team relied heavily on Parker Leoff, who went 1-for-3 with one home run and two RBI. Ian Brown also deserves some recognition as he snagged his first stolen base of the season.

West and Redondo Union could both be facing uphill battles in their next games considering their disadvantage in the MaxPreps California Rankings. The Warriors will face off against Mira Costa at 3:15 p.m. on Wednesday with a big rank disadvantage (440 vs. 35). Meanwhile, Redondo Union (ranked 273rd) will meet Warren (ranked 127th) at 6:00 p.m. on Saturday.
