Baseball Recap: Fernley Takes Down Wooster in a Playoff Battle

It can be hard to translate regular season success to the playoffs, but Fernley had no problem doing just that on Saturday. They blew past the Wooster Colts 7-0. The game was the first time the Vaqueros have beaten the Colts on their field since March 9, 2024.

The result came thanks to Dylon Comer's shutout, as he gave up just two hits and racked up 14 Ks. He has been consistent: he hasn't given up more than one earned run in five consecutive appearances.

At the plate, Riley McCullar was incredible, going a perfect 4-for-4 with two triples, three runs, and two RBI. He is becoming a predictor of Fernley's success: when he posts at least two runs the team is 7-2 (and 4-13-1 when he doesn't). Alex Welsh also deserves some recognition as he launched his first home run of the season.

Fernley is on a roll lately: they've won eight of their last ten matches. That's provided a massive bump to their 11-15-1 record this season. Those wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 6.3 runs over those games. As for Wooster, this is the second loss in a row for them and nudges their season record down to 12-12-1.

Coming up, Fernley will challenge Elko at 8:30 a.m. on Thursday. The Vaqueros' pitchers better be ready for this one: the Indians have averaged an impressive 6.6 runs per game this season. Wooster does not have any more games scheduled as of now.
