Ohio Mr. Football Lamar Sperling runs for 356 yards in Division II state championship game loss

Archbishop Hoban falls to Toledo Central Catholic despite Buffalo-bound back's big effort.

Central Catholic (Toledo) beat Archbishop Hoban (Akron) 28-21 for the Ohio Division II state title Thursday night but Lamar Sperling garnered much of the attention with a historic rushing performance for the runner-up.

Hours after earning Mr. Football honors for the state, Sperling ran 40 times for 356 yards and three touchdowns in a losing effort. That brought his season totals to 3,867 yards on the ground and a state record 59 trips to the end zone.

Sperling, a 5-foot-10, 180-pound senior, is headed to play for Buffalo next season.
