Basketball Game Preview: Sumner Spartans vs. Rogers Rams

The Sumner Spartans will face off against the Rogers Rams at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday. Sumner knows how to get points on the board -- the team has finished with 55 points or more in their past 11 contests -- so hopefully Rogers likes a good challenge.

On Tuesday, Sumner blew past Yelm, posting a 76-27 win. Given the Spartans' advantage in MaxPreps' Washington basketball rankings (they are ranked 60th, while the Tornados are ranked 337th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.

Meanwhile, Rogers entered their tilt with Bethel on Tuesday with two consecutive wins but they'll enter their next game with three. They blew past the Bison 77-54. The match marked the Rams' most dominant victory of the season.

Sumner better keep an eye on Treyshawn Weatherspoon. He was instrumental in Rogers' win, going 8 for 11 on his way to 18 points in addition to six steals and five assists. The team also got some help courtesy of Nick Sanders, who went 5 of 7 on his way to 13 points.

Rogers is on a roll lately: they've won seven of their last eight games, which provided a massive bump to their 9-5 record this season. Those victories came thanks to their offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 72.5 points per game. As for Sumner, their win was their fourth straight on the road, which pushed their record up to 11-4.

Sumner was able to grind out a solid victory over Rogers in their previous matchup back in December of 2024, winning 81-69. Will Sumner repeat their success, or does Rogers have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
