Basketball Game Preview: Elyria Pioneers vs. St. Edward Eagles

The Elyria Pioneers will head out to take on the St. Edward Eagles at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday. Elyria knows how to get points on the board -- the squad has finished with 55 points or more in their past three matchups -- so hopefully St. Edward likes a good challenge.

Elyria proved they can win big last Friday (they won by 30) and on Friday they proved they can win the close ones too. They narrowly escaped with a victory as the team sidled past Berea-Midpark 86-83. The Pioneers haven't had any issues with the Titans recently, as the game was their third consecutive win against them.

It was another big night for Jayden Crutcher, who went 6-for-10 from beyond the arc on his way to 33 points. Those 33 points gave him a new career-high. Kendyll Compton was another key player, dropping a double-double with 18 points and 13 boards.

Elyria smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 11 offensive rebounds. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least ten offensive boards in five consecutive contests.

Meanwhile, St. Edward was just a bucket shy of victory on Friday and fell 62-61 to St. John's Jesuit.

St. Edward has also traveled a rocky road recently having lost three of their last four games. That's put a noticeable dent in their 14-8 record this season. Elyria's victory was their 15th straight at home dating back to last season, which pushed their record up to 17-5.

Elyria was taken down by St. Edward 74-46 when the teams last played back in March of 2023. Can Elyria avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
