Baseball Game Preview: South Decatur Cougars vs. Morristown Yellow Jackets

South Decatur has gone 9-1 against Morristown recently and they'll look to pad the win column further on Thursday. The Cougars will look to defend their home field against the Yellow Jackets at 5:30 p.m. Both come into the matchup bolstered by wins in their previous matches.

South Decatur was handed a heart-breaking two-run loss in their last game, but they sure didn't let that happen against Waldron on Wednesday. The Cougars put the hurt on the Mohawks with a sharp 9-2 victory.

JP Scudder spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: he surrendered just two earned runs on three hits and racked up 15 Ks. He has become a key player for South Decatur: the team is 3-1 when he posts at least eight strikeouts, but 1-5 otherwise.

On the hitting side, the team relied heavily on Toby Bishop, who went 2-for-4 with three RBI, one stolen base, and one run. That's the most RBI he has posted since back in May of 2024. The team also got some help courtesy of Corbin Johnson, who went 1-for-3 with two stolen bases, two runs, and one RBI.

Meanwhile, it may have taken eight innings to finish the job, but Morristown ultimately got the result they hoped for on Tuesday. They narrowly escaped with a win as the team sidled past South Decatur 7-5.

South Decatur pushed their record up to 4-6 with the victory, which was their third straight on the road. Those road wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 1.3 runs on average over those games. As for Morristown, their victory ended a seven-game drought on the road dating back to last season and puts them at 3-9.

South Decatur couldn't quite finish off Morristown in their previous matchup on Tuesday and fell 7-5. Can the Cougars avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
