Basketball Preview: Boyd Anderson Cobras vs. Fort Lauderdale Flying L's

The Boyd Anderson Cobras's road trip will continue as they head out to face the Fort Lauderdale Flying L at 6:00 p.m. on February 5th. Both teams took a loss in their last game, so they'll have plenty of motivation to get the 'W'.

Last Tuesday, Boyd Anderson came up short against the Lightning and fell 45-34. While losing is never fun, Boyd Anderson can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Florida basketball rankings (they are ranked 428th, while the Lightning are ranked 207th).

Despite the defeat, Boyd Anderson had strong showings from Jakaylia Roland, who scored 15 points along with six rebounds and five steals, and Ja'Kira Dennis, who scored eight points along with seven rebounds and five steals. Roland is crushing the steal category: she's posted at least two every time she's taken the court this season. Another player making a difference was Kristian Watson, who scored a point along with five rebounds and three steals.

Even though they lost, Boyd Anderson smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 15 offensive rebounds. This was only their 14th loss (out of 21 games) when they hit their own glass that hard.

Meanwhile, Fort Lauderdale's recent rough patch got a bit rougher on Tuesday after their fourth straight defeat. They were dealt a 63-26 loss at the hands of Cypress Bay.

Despite the defeat, Fort Lauderdale had strong showings from Azaziah Evans-Blake, who scored nine points, and Maranda Byrnes, who scored 11 points. That was a full 34.6% of Fort Lauderdale's points, marking the fifth time in a row she's earned more than a third of the team's points.

Boyd Anderson has been struggling recently as they've lost eight of their last ten matches, which put a noticeable dent in their 7-17 record this season. As for Fort Lauderdale, their defeat was their seventh straight on the road, which dropped their record down to 5-10.

Monday's matchup is shaping up to be a scrappy matchup: Boyd Anderson have been smashing the glass this season, having averaged 39.2 rebounds per game. It's a different story for Fort Lauderdale, though, as they've been averaging only 3.1 rebounds per game. Given Boyd Anderson's sizable advantage in that area, the Flying L's will need to find a way to close that gap.

Everything came up roses for Boyd Anderson against the Flying L's in their previous meeting back in December of 2023 as the squad secured a 40-10 win. The rematch might be a little tougher for Boyd Anderson since the team won't have the home-court advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
