Baseball Recap: Sanford Has No Trouble Against Portland

Sanford never got on the board in their matchup on Thursday, but that sure wasn't the case in their game against Portland on Monday. They put the hurt on the Bulldogs with a sharp 12-1 win. That looming 12-1 mark stands out as the most commanding margin for the Spartans yet this season.

Zach Kassim looked comfortable as he pitched two innings while giving up no earned runs off one hit. The dominant performance also gave him a new career-high in strikeouts (four).

On the hitting side, Matthew Hebert was a standout: he went 2-for-3 with one stolen base, two RBI, and one run. Those two hits gave him a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Drew Vessels, who went 1-for-4 with two stolen bases, two runs, and one RBI.

Sanford is on a roll lately: they've won three of their last four contests. That's provided a nice bump to their 4-2 record this season. Those victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 1.3 runs on average over those games. As for Portland, they are on a six-game losing streak that has dropped them down to 0-6.

We've got plenty of inter-region action coming up soon. Sanford is set to face off against their familiar foe South Portland at 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday. The two teams have allowed few runs on average (the Spartans 3.2, the Red Riots 1.6) so any runs scored will be well earned. Meanwhile, Portland will take on rival Noble at 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday.
