Basketball Recap: Merrillville Takes a Loss

Merrillville was the 61-59 winner over Portage when they last played one another back in January of 2024, but their luck changed this time around. The Merrillville Pirates lost 64-40 to the Portage Indians on Saturday. The match marked the Pirates' lowest-scoring game so far this season.

Portage's win was a true team effort, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Michael Wellman, who went 6 of 11 on his way to 14 points. The team also got some help courtesy of Garrett Clark, who posted 14 points and eight rebounds.

Merrillville has traveled a rocky road recently having lost three of their last four contests, which put a noticeable dent in their 3-6 record this season. As for Portage, they are on a roll lately: they've won four of their last five matches, which provided a nice bump to their 6-2 record this season.

Merrillville didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next game, a 77-54 defeat against South Bend Washington on the 2nd. As for Portage, they also wasted no time getting back out on the court and have already played their next contest, a 76-66 victory against Lawrence Central on the 2nd.
