Soccer Game Preview: Poquoson vs. Lafayette

The Poquoson Islanders are taking a road trip to face off against the Lafayette Rams at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday. Poquoson's offense has struggled lately (the team hasn't scored more than a single goal for five straight games), a trend the team is no doubt ready to end.

On Tuesday, Poquoson came up short against New Kent and fell 3-1.

Meanwhile, Lafayette waltzed into their match on Tuesday with three straight wins... but they left with four. They came within a single goal of losing the streak, but they secured a 1-0 W against the Packers. The victory was all the more spectacular given Lafayette's disadvantage in MaxPreps' Virginia soccer rankings (they are ranked 62nd, while Smithfield are ranked 17th).

Lafayette pushed their record up to 8-5-2 with the win, which was their fourth straight on the road. As for Poquoson, their defeat was their first in the region, dropping their region record down to 2-1 and their overall record down to 4-9-2.

Poquoson suffered a grim 4-0 defeat to Lafayette in their previous matchup back in April of 2024. Can the Islanders avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
