Valdosta (Ga.) sits one win away from No. 900 and tops the list of the top 50 winningest high school football teams.

Highlights from Alabama, Hawaii and Virginia make the cut.

After coming close in 2015, Valdosta (Ga.) is poised to become the first high school football team to win 900 games.

The historic win could come Friday when the Wildcats meet crosstown rival Lowndes in the Winnersville Classic. In its 103-year history, Valdosta has won 899 games, missing No. 900 last year when it fell to Grayson in the second round of the Georgia Class 6A state playoffs.

When it picks up win No. 900, Valdosta will become only the second football program of any kind to win 900 games. The University of Michigan is the all-time NCAA leader with 925 wins.

Valdosta enters the 2016 season with a new head coach in Allan Rodemaker, who replaced Rance Gillespie. The Wildcats take on a Lowndes team they defeated 17-7 last year. Lowndes is coming off a 6-5 season.

Valdosta also heads the MaxPreps list of the top 50 programs with the most all-time wins. This year's list is a compilation of several recordings, including the information provided in the National Federation of State High School Associations record book, the website Football Friday Night (which continues the work of football historian Robert Fawcett), as well as state association record books, school websites and information provided by state historians.

For each team, we've provided the number of wins as determined by the best source available. We've included the all-time record, the source of the win total and the win total for the 2015 season.

In addition to Valdosta's milestone win, several other programs are closing in on 800 all-time wins. Central (Little Rock, Ark.) needs just two wins to reach 800, while Brockton (Mass.) is seven wins away. Summerville (S.C.) could also reach 800 if it wins nine games this season.
