Baseball Game Preview: St. John Fighting Herald vs. Perry Pirates

The St. John Fighting Herald are taking a road trip to take on the Perry Pirates at 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday. St. John will aim to continue their four-game streak of scoring more runs each game than the last.

St. John came out on top against Jefferson Area on Monday thanks in part to the team's impressive nine-run sixth inning. The Fighting Herald put the hurt on the Falcons with a sharp 14-1 victory. Considering the Fighting Herald have won 11 contests by more than nine runs this season, Monday's blowout was nothing new.

Gus Petros made a splash no matter where he played. He looked comfortable on the mound, striking out six batters over five innings while giving up just one earned run off three hits. He has been consistent recently: he hasn't given up more than one earned run in four consecutive appearances. He was also big at the plate, going 1-for-3 with two RBI and one run. Those two RBI gave him a new career-high.

In other batting news, Will Anderson and Chase Newsome did most of the damage at the plate: Anderson went 2-for-4 with two stolen bases, three runs, and two RBI, while Newsome got on base in all four of his plate appearances with three runs, one triple, and one stolen base. That's the most RBI Anderson has posted since back in April. Another player making a difference was Anthony Severino, who went 2-for-4 with four RBI, one run, and one double.

St. John was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .419. That was just more of the same: they've now posted a batting average of .371 or higher in three consecutive matches.

Perry might be feeling deja-vu: they lost 7-4 to Hudson, which was the same score (and result) they got the week prior. The Pirates have now taken an 'L' in back-to-back games.

St. John has been performing incredibly well recently as they've won eight of their last nine games. That's provided a nice bump to their 16-4 record this season. Those wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 11.0 runs over those games. As for Perry, their defeat dropped their record down to 20-5.

St. John might still be hurting after the 19-0 loss they got from Perry when the teams last played back in April of 2023. Can the Fighting Herald avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
