Football Recap: Classical Academy Caimans vs. Coronado Islanders

If Classical Academy was riding high off their 50-0 takedown of El Cajon Valley last Saturday, their most recent game may have dampened their spirits a bit. The Classical Academy Caimans fell 34-23 to the Coronado Islanders on Friday. The Caimans were given a dose of their own medicine in this game as the Islanders apparently hadn't forgotten their defeat the last time these teams played back in August of 2019.

Classical Academy lost despite a true team effort on the offense, the best among them being Sawyer Bray, who rushed for 87 yards and a touchdown on only eight carries, and also threw for 127 yards on eight of 16 attempts. Justus Smith was in the mix too, providing Classical Academy with two touchdowns.

Jaiden Sherman had an outrageously good game for Coronado as he threw for 209 yards and three touchdowns on only 16 passes, and also rushed for 71 yards and a touchdown. Michael Bannon was Sherman's top target, picking up 81 receiving yards and two touchdowns.

Having lost for the first time this season, Classical Academy fell to 2-1. As for Coronado, the victory snapped their losing streak at seven games dating back to last season and leaves them with a 1-2 record.

Classical Academy will venture away from home to challenge Clairemont at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. As for Coronado, they are headed away from home for the first time to face off against Escondido Charter at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. Hopefully Escondido Charter focused on turnovers this week as team gave up four on Friday.
