Football Recap: Weslaco Panthers vs. San Benito Greyhounds
Weslaco had already proven themselves in the regular season and they didn't miss a beat now that it's playoff time. They breezed by the San Benito Greyhounds to the tune of 28-0 on Saturday. The Panthers have seen this before: they got the W the last time they saw the Greyhounds, too.
A big part of Weslaco's victory came down to the chemistry between Chris Luna and his top target Francisco Trevino. Luna gained 158 total yards and two touchdowns while Trevino threw for 156 yards and three touchdowns. Luna showed off some serious burst, lighting up the secondary with a catch for 53 yards. Weslaco also got a significant boost from Andres Valdez, who ran away from the competition to the tune of 89 yards.
The win (which was Weslaco's third in a row) raised their record to 8-3. Those victories were due in large part to their defensive effort, having only surrendered 13.3 points per game. As for San Benito, their defeat dropped their record down to 2-9.
Weslaco will square off against East Central at 7:30 p.m. on Friday. East Central knows how to get points on the board -- the team has finished with 31 points or more in their past six games -- so hopefully Weslaco likes a good challenge. San Benito does not have any more games scheduled as of now.
