MaxPreps 2012 Small Schools All-American Football Team

When selecting the MaxPreps Small Schools All-American coach and player of the year, all that needed to be done was go to the top of the list.

Found at the top of the national passing yardage list is Will Grier, the Davidson Day junior quarterback who led the nation in passing yardage with 5,785 yards and also set an unofficial national record with 837 yards in one game. His performance this year at the North Carolina private school was enough to gain him North Carolina All-State first team honors by the Associated Press.

Found at the top of the national rankings are the Curtis Patriots and their coach J.T. Curtis. In finishing the season ranked No. 1 in the country by nearly every ranking service, Curtis pulled off a rare feat by a school that plays in the one of the smallest enrollment divisions in the state of Louisiana.

Along the way, coach Curtis won his 25th state championship in 44 years at the school. The Patriots have reached the state finals each of the past 17 years and they currently have a 28-game win streak with back-to-back state titles. Curtis also ranks second all-time in career wins in national high school football history with a record of 520-54-6.



The MaxPreps Small Schools All-American team consists of players chosen from schools that play in state enrollment divisions that generally have less than 1,000 students.

First Team Offense

WR – Corey Robinson, 6-4, 195, San Antonio Christian (Texas), Senior

A TAPPS All-State player and a member of the San Antonio News Express All-Area Team, Robinson was a U.S. Army All-American and caught 67 passes for 1,414 yards and 20 touchdowns. He is committed to Notre Dame and the son of NBA Hall of Famer David Robinson.

WR – Jordan Cunningham, 6-1, 175, University (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.), Senior
Cunningham was named to the Florida Class 3A All-State Team and was also selected to the Sun-Sentinel All-Palm County Small Schools Team. An Under Armour All-American, Cunningham caught 53 passes for 817 yards and eight touchdowns for the 3A state champions.

WR – Jonathan Howard, 6-4, 181, Wilcox County (Rochelle, Ga.), Senior
A Class A All-State player, Howard set a Georgia state record with 1,630 yards receiving on 115 catches with 17 touchdowns. He is committed to North Carolina.

TE – Johnny Mundt, 6-4, 225, Central Catholic (Modesto, Calif.), Senior
The Western Athletic Conference Player of the Year, Mundt led the Raiders to a California Division IV state championship while catching 33 passes for 625 yards and eight touchdowns. The Oregon commit was also a standout on defense with 80 tackles and 15.5 sacks.

OL – Ira Denson, 6-4, 320, Madison County (Madison, Fla.), Senior
Denson landed a spot on the Florida 3A All-State Team and also earned mention on the Tallahassee All-Big Bend Team. Denson, a Florida State commit, played in the Under Armour All-American Game



OL – R.J. Prince, 6-6, 285, Albemarle (N.C.), Senior
Prince, a North Carolina commit, was named to the Associated Press All-State Team as well as the NCPreps All-State Team and Class 1A All-State Team.

OL – D.J. Park, 6-5, 305, Dillon (S.C.), Senior
Park played in the Semper Fidelis All-American Game and was also selected All-State by the High School Sports Report while leading Dillon to a state championship. He is committed to South Carolina.

OL – Rob Boyd, 6-4, 285, Vian (Okla.), Senior

Boyd made first team All-State by the Oklahoma City Oklahoman while leading his team to the Class 2A semifinals. A four-year starter at Vian, he is committed to Tulsa.

OL – Josh Thomas, 6-7, 321, Evangel Christian Academy (Shreveport, La.), Senior
Named to the Class 2A All-State team, Thomas was also named All-City by the Shreveport Times after helping lead his team to the 2A state championship game. He is committed to Houston.

QB – Matt Bodamer, 6-1, 175, Port Allegany (Pa.), Senior
The Pennsylvania Football News and Gatorade named Bodamer the State Player of the Year after he became the state's career yardage leader with 10,948 yards. This year he completed 227 of 323 passes for 3,951 yards and 52 touchdowns.

QB – Will Grier, 6-3, 185, Davidson Day (Davidson, N.C.), Junior
Besides earning first team All-State honors by the Associated Press, Grier led the nation in passing yardage and touchdowns with 5,785 yards (324 of 414) with 69 touchdowns. The Florida commit also set an unofficial national record with 837 yards in one game against Harrells Christian Academy.



RB – Jacob Taylor, 5-11, 173, Rim of the World (Lake Arrowhead, Calif.), Senior
Taylor finished second in the nation in rushing yardage with 4,036 yards on 416 carries with 57 touchdowns. He helped Rim of the World win a Southern Section championship and was named to the All-Inland Valley Team by the Riverside Press Enterprise. He rushed for more than 300 yards eight times and scored at least five touchdowns five times.

RB – Damien Haskins, 5-9, 213, New Boston (Texas), Senior

The Class 2A Offensive Player of the Year in Texas, Haskins led the state in rushing with 3,207 yards on 288 carries. He also scored 52 touchdowns on the year and is committed to Oregon State.

RB – Kelvin Taylor, 5-10, 205, Glades Day (Belle Glade, Fla.), Senior
Taylor ranks among the all-time rushing leaders in high school history with 12,019 yards in five seasons at Glades Day. He was the Sun Sentinel Small Schools Player of the Year for Broward County and he was the Class 2A Florida Dairy Farmers Player of the Year. He also earned Class 2A All-State honors and played in the Under Armour All-American Game. The Florida commit also had 192 career touchdowns and rushed for 2,423 yards and 41 touchdowns this season.

AP – Ardarius Stewart, 6-1, 185, Fultondale (Birmingham, Ala.), Senior
The Metro Player of the Year by the Birmingham News, Stewart was also a Class 2A All-State player after scoring 52 touchdowns on passes, runs and returns. For his career he has 138 total touchdowns and he rushed for 1,988 yards this year. Stewart is committed to Alabama.

K – Greg Joseph, 6-1, 195, American Heritage (Delray Beach, Fla.), Senior
Joseph was named to the Class 3A All-State Team and the Sun-Sentinel All-County Team, and booted 10 of 12 field goals, including a 46-yarder, and was 52 of 54 on extra points. He also had 89 percent of his kickoffs go for touchbacks.

Named to the Sacramento Bee All-Metro Team and also a member of the U.S. Army All-American Game, Vanderdoes registered 72 tackles and nine sacks for the Hillmen.

DL – Tyquan Lewis, 6-4, 230, Tarboro (N.C.), Senior
Lewis earned first team All-State honors by the Associated Press and NC Preps and was also named to the Class 2A All-State team. The Ohio State commit helped lead Tarboro to its fifth-straight state championship game.

DL – Montravius Adams, 6-3, 285, Dooly County (Vienna, Ga.), Senior
A participant in the Under Armour All-American Game, Adams was named the Class 1A Defensive MVP by the Associated Press and the Atlanta Journal Constitution. He had 127 tackles, including 95 solo, with 7.5 sacks.

DL – Kendell Beckwith, 6-2, 220, East Feliciana (Clinton, La.), Senior
The Class 3A State Player of the Year and the Baton Rouge Area Defensive Player of the Year, Beckwith also played in the Under Armour All-American Game. The LSU commit had 91 tackles, 23 for loss, with 17 sacks and two fumble recoveries.

A two-sport athlete, Martarano will likely be selected in the MLB draft in June. In football, he was the Class 3A State Player of the Year by the Idaho Statesman after racking up 50 solo tackles with 84 assists, four interceptions and two sacks. The Boise State commit also threw for 1,175 yards (62 of 97) as a quarterback and rushed for 463 yards and 22 total touchdowns.

LB – Chans Cox, 6-3, 230, Blue Ridge (Lakeside, Ariz.), Senior
Although slowed by an ankle injury, Cox still earned first team All-Arizona honors by the Arizona Republic and was selected to play in the U.S. Army All-American Game. He is committed to Arizona State.



LB – Jaylon Smith, 6-3, 225, Bishop Luers (Fort Wayne, Ind.), Senior
Regarded as the nation's top linebacker, Smith won the Dick Butkus Award, was Class 2A All-State and played in the U.S. Army All-American Game. The Notre Dame commit had 75 tackles, including 20 for loss, with eight sacks in leading Bishop Luers to a state title.

LB – Duke Riley, 6-1, 205, Curtis (River Ridge, La.), Senior
Riley helped lead Curtis to a No. 1 national ranking by MaxPreps as he earned Small Schools Defensive Player of the Year Honors by the Times Picayune. He was also the Class 2A Defensive Player of the Year while making 124 tackles, including 19 for loss, for a defense that registered seven shutouts.

The Class 2A Defensive Player of the Year after leading Bassfield to a state title, Graves also earned a spot on the Jackson Clarion-Ledger All-State team. He finished the season with 100 tackles.

DB – Ty Slanina, 6-0, 185, East Bernard (Texas), Senior
An all-around athlete, Slanina led East Bernard to a 15-0 season with 38 total touchdowns. He is committed to TCU.

DB – Tyler Boyd, 6-2, 175, Clairton (Pa.), Senior
The Player of the Year by the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, Boyd led Clairton to its fourth-straight state championship and the nation's longest active winning streak at 63 straight games. He had 117 career touchdowns and 5,755 yards rushing. As a senior, the Pittsburgh commit ran for 2,584 yards and 43 touchdowns and also caught 13 passes for 295 yards and three touchdowns. He played in the U.S. Army All-American Game.

DB – Nick Washington, 5-11, 170, Trinity Christian (Jacksonville, Fla.), Senior
A Class 3A All-State pick, Washington also played in the U.S. Army All-American Game and was named All-First Coast. The Florida commit had 48 tackles and three interceptions at safety.



DB – Dee Paul, 5-11, 160, Munday (Texas), Senior
The Class 1A State Defensive Player of the Year, Paul led Munday to a 15-0 record and a state championship. He rushed 129 times for 1,959 yards and 32 touchdowns and also passed for 1,579 yards (65 of 117) for 23 scores. On defense, he had 57 tackles and eight interceptions.

P – Jordan Bellar, 6-0, 165, Norfolk Catholic (Neb.), Senior
Besides quarterbacking Norfolk Catholic to a Class C-1 state championship, Bellar also earned Super State honors as a punter, averaging 45.1 yards per boot on 30 attempts.

Conway ranks among the all-time leading receivers in Pennsylvania after catching 77 passes for 1,482 yards and 24 touchdowns. He earned a spot on the Pennsylvania Football News and Associated Press Class 1A All-State Teams.

WR - Malachi Dupre, 6-3, 180, Curtis (River Ridge, La.), Junior
A Class 2A All-State selection, Dupre had 36 catches for 816 yards and 15 touchdowns in Curtis' run-oriented attack.

Hart was among the national leaders with 2,044 yards on 108 catches with 29 touchdowns and earned TAPPS All-State honors.



TE – Charlie Reid, 6-4, 230, All Saints (Fort Worth, Texas), Senior
Named to the Fort Worth Telegram Super Team, Reid caught 50 passes for 1,229 yards and 17 touchdowns for the Southwest Prep small school champions. He is committed to TCU.

OL – Anthony Taylor, 6-7, 320, Curtis (River Ridge, La.), Senior
One of several Division I prospects on the offensive line for Curtis, Taylor earned Class 2A All-State honors and was named to the Times Picayune All-Area Small Schools team.

OL – Matt Meyer, 6-6, 285, Lynden (Wash.), Senior
Meyer helped lead Lynden to a state championship and was also named to the Seattle Times All-State Team. He is committed to Washington State.

OL – Dorian Miller, 6-2, 305, Metuchen (N.J.), Senior

Poland was selected to the All-San Diego Section Team, and is committed to USC.

Son of NBA Hall of Famer Karl Malone, K.J. landed on the Class 1A All-State Team. He is committed to LSU.

The Class 2A State Offensive Player of the Year, Duron completed 283 of 401 passes for 4,123 yards and 43 touchdowns in leading Evangel Christian to the state finals.

QB – Taylor Lamb, 6-1, 185, Calhoun (Ga.), Senior
The Gatorade State Player of the Year, Lamb was Class 2A All-State and was the Rome News-Tribune's Offensive Player of the Year after leading Calhoun to the state finals for the second-straight year. The South Alabama commit threw for 3,499 yards and 36 touchdowns and also ran for 417 yards and 12 scores.

RB – Max Mickey, 5-10, 170, Holden (Mo.), Senior
Mickey led the state of Missouri in rushing and was third in the nation after gaining 3,382 yards on 331 carries with 45 touchdowns. He was named to the Division 3 All-State Team and finished his career with 7,504 yards.

A member of the NJ.com All-State Team and the Group 1 All-State Team, Clement rushed for 2,323 yards on 191 carries with 33 touchdowns. The Wisconsin commit also played in the Semper Fidelis All-American Game.

RB – Sty Hairston, 5-11, 180, Banning (Calif.), Senior
The fourth-leading rusher in the nation, second in California, Hairston ran 234 times for 3,376 yards and 56 touchdowns. He earned a spot on the Riverside Press Enterprise All-Inland Team.

AP – Bryant Shirreffs, 6-3, 200, Jefferson (Ga.), Senior
The Class 2A Offensive Player of the Year in Georgia, Shirreffs led Jefferson to a state championship while passing for 2,369 yards (174 of 257) and rushing for 1,372 yards. He threw 18 touchdown passes and rushed for 20.



K – Daniel Carlson, 6-4, 205, The Classical Academy (Colorado Springs, Colo.), Senior
A participant in the U.S. Army All-American Game, Carlson was a member of the Denver Post All-State Team after kicking 10 field goals and booting 54 kickoffs for touchbacks. He is committed to Auburn.

Named to the All-Baton Rouge Area Team and the Class 2A All-State Team, Williams also played in the Under Armour All-American Game.

DL – Brandon Crawford, 6-1, 225, Madison County (Madison, Fla.), Senior
Crawford was named to the Tallahassee All-Big Bend Team and the Florida Class 3A All-State Team.

DL – Justin Lawler, 6-5, 230, Pottsboro (Texas), Senior
Lawler, an SMU commit, was named the Class 2A State Defensive Player of the Year in Texas after racking up 113 tackles, 13 sacks and 24 tackles for loss during the regular season.

DL – Marquis Haynes, 6-4, 220, University Christian (Jacksonville, Fla.), Senior

A Class 2A All-State pick, Haynes was also All-First Coast with 73 tackles and 25 sacks. He is committed to North Carolina.



LB – Somari Wright, 6-2, 205, Cameron Yoe (Cameron, Texas), Junior
Wright was named to the Class 2A All-State Team and helped Cameron Yoe to a state championship. He had 174 tackles on the year.

LB – Jonathon Jackson, 5-11, 215, Mayfield (Ky.), Senior
A two-time All-State selection by the Louisville Courier-Journal, Jackson had 166 tackles on the season and 601 for his career. He also rushed for 1,951 yards and 37 touchdowns and played in four Class A state championship games.

LB - Nick Sorrenti, 6-1, 235, Maine-Endwell (Endwell, N.Y.), Senior
The Class A State Player of the Year in New York, Sorrenti helped Maine-Endwell to a state championship and was named the Elmira Gazette's Elite 24 Player of the Year.

LB – Zach Dickman, 6-1, 225, Coldwater (Ohio), Senior
Named the Division V State Defensive Player of the Year by JJHuddle, Dickman had 139 tackles and three sacks in leading Coldwater to a 15-0 season and the state championship.

LB – Delvin Purifoy, 6-3, 215, Pensacola Catholic (Fla.), Junior

Purifoy was named to the Class 3A All-State Team and was also honored on the Pensacola All-Area Team. He had 116 tackles on the season.

DB – Ryan Moeller, 6-1, 200, Rifle (Colo.), Senior
Besides rushing 272 times for 3,002 yards and 43 touchdowns, Moeller also intercepted eight passes on the season. He earned first team All-State honors by the Denver Post.



DB – Richard Allen, 5-10, 185, Curtis (River Ridge, La.), Senior
Allen was a Class 2A All-State pick and a member of the Times-Picayune Small Schools All-Area Team. The Tulane commit had five interceptions on the season, including two in the state championship game, and returned five kicks for scores.

DB – Brandon Mayes, 6-11, 170, Aurora Christian (Ill.), Senior
A member of the Chicago Tribune All-State Team, Mayes did a little of everything, including picking off three passes and making 123 tackles. The Northern Illinois commit also earned Class 3A All-State honors.

DB – Anthony Averett, 6-1, 180, Woodbury (N.J.), Senior
Averett played in the Semper Fidelis All-American Game and was an NJ.com All-State pick. He had 70 tackles and five interceptions on defense. The Alabama commit also ran for 1,278 yards and 15 touchdowns and passed for 836 yards and 14 scores.

P – Harrison Butker, 6-4, 175, Westminster (Atlanta, Ga.), Senior
Regarded as one of the top all-around kickers and punters in the country, Butker earned a spot on the Class 2A All-State team in Georgia. He is committed to Georgia Tech.
