Basketball Recap: Dynamic Duo of Holly Jiron and Courtney Craig Lead Crownpoint to Victory

For whatever reason, it's the away team that's had the advantage when Crownpoint and Wingate meet (two straight games heading into this one) and that held true again on Monday. The Crownpoint Eagles walked away with a 50-40 win over the Wingate Bears. That's the fourth time they've managed to beat them this season, with their most recent victory being a 65-57 win back in February.

Leading Crownpoint to victory were Courtney Craig and Holly Jiron. Craig dropped a double-double with 12 points and 20 boards, while Jiron shot 47% from the field on her way to 20 points and three steals. Crownpoint is 7-3 when Jiron posts three or more steals, but 6-11 otherwise. Arabela Balicat was another key player, putting up four points and four steals.

When it comes to explaining why Wingate lost, don't look at Morning Sky Iron Moccasin. Despite the final result, she posted 13 points. The team also got some help courtesy of Freeanna Yazzie, who had eight points.

Crownpoint's victory bumped their record up to 13-14. As for Wingate, they have traveled a rocky road recently, having lost nine of their last 12 contests. That's put a noticeable dent in their 14-13 record this season.

Crownpoint didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next game, a 50-32 defeat against Tohatchi on the 25th. Wingate will get a bit of extra time to process the loss as their next game is a ways off. They'll take on Crownpoint at 6:00 p.m. on March 7th.
