Cypress Lakes hasn't had much luck against Cypress Woods recently, but that could start to change on Saturday. The Spartans will face off against the Wildcats at 11:00 a.m. Given that the two teams suffered a loss in their last games, they both have a little extra motivation heading into this game.
Last Thursday, Cypress Lakes took a blow against Waller, falling 54-21. The matchup marked the Spartans' lowest-scoring contest so far this season.
Cypress Lakes' defeat shouldn't obscure the performances of Jimmy Alarcon, who threw for 198 yards and three TDs, and Cj Lewis, who picked up 98 receiving yards and a pair of scores. Lewis showed off some serious burst, connecting on a big catch for 67 yards.
Cypress Woods had taken Langham Creek down for three straight games at home, but that winning streak came to an end on Saturday. The Wildcats took a 28-19 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Lobos.
Cypress Lakes will have to keep a close watch on Darien Rogers and Coby Guillory, a pair of players who had a big impact on Cypress Woods' prior game. Rogers threw for 214 yards on 15 of 26 attempts, while Guillory picked up 149 receiving yards.
Even if they lost, Cypress Woods' defense still kept up the pressure with seven sacks. Thomason Strickland was especially locked on to Langham Creek's QB and sacked him twice. Strickland is also crushing it when it comes to total tackles: he's made at least five every time he's taken the field this season. Aiden Haby got in on the action too, converting a pick into a touchdown.
Cypress Woods' loss dropped their record down to 3-2. As for Cypress Lakes, they now have a losing record of 2-3.
Saturday's game will pit two of the most dominant signal callers against one another: Alarcon and Rogers. Alarcon just won't slow down this season and has thrown 14 touchdowns while averaging 205.8 passing yards per game. Rogers has been a dominant force too and has averaged 157 passing yards per game.
Cypress Lakes came up short against Cypress Woods in their previous matchup back in October of 2024, falling 21-14. Can the Spartans avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
