Recap: Monacan Chiefs vs. Powhatan Indians
After flying high against the Richmond City School of the Arts Bulldogs last Thursday, The Monacan Chiefs came back down to earth. Monacan fell just short of Powhatan by a score of 23-20. Despite 257 more yards than Powhatan, Monacan couldn't convert that extra yardage to scores.
When it comes to explaining why Monacan lost on Friday, one person who can't be blamed is Turner Johnson. Despite the final result, he threw for 326 yards and two touchdowns. The team also got some help courtesy of Derek Devault, who picked up 97 receiving yards and a touchdown.
Powhatan's success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Edgar Alejo led the charge by rushing for 23 yards and a touchdown, while also picking up 37 receiving yards. Ben Whitver was another key contributor, picking up 105 receiving yards and a touchdown.
Monacan's defeat dropped their record down to 3-5. As for Powhatan, the win was the third in a row for they, bringing their record for this year to 5-3.
Monacan will head out on the road to face off against James River Midlothian at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. The matchup should be an exciting one, as these teams are ranked near one another in Virginia (James River Midlothian is ranked 187th, while Monacan is ranked 193rd). As for Powhatan, they will look to defend their home field on Thursday against Clover Hill at 7:00 p.m. Clover Hill is hoping to put an end to a four-game streak of away losses.
